The importance of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library resides in the number and the richness of the volumes that it guards. As a consequence of the confiscation of the ecclesiastical goods of 1835, the holdings of the convent libraries in Barcelona, very rich in manuscripts, incunabula and printed books from 16th to 18th centuries, were gathered in the University in order to create a great Public Library. These books constitute, nowadays, the main body of the collection of the Rare Book and Manuscript Library of the University of Barcelona, with an important collection of engravings and parchments, and some donations, as the one of Rudolf Grewe about kitchen and gastronomy.
